The first Middle-Eastern nightclub in America, Club Zara, opened in Boston in 1952. Dinner and drinks included live entertainment. The 1950s - 80s would become the "Nightclub Era" of Boston belly dance. During this time you could see belly dancing and hear live music seven nights a week. Because of the similarities in culture and cuisine, Lebanese, Greeks, and Armenians mingled and shared their music to create the rich musical repertoire that is unique to Boston and New England. The vital role played by music and dance in immigrant communities had a significant impact on the popularity of belly dance in mainstream America. Belly dancer and dance historian Amy Smith will talk about her research in this era, and show a multimedia presentation that includes photos and music of the era.
